"The national fiber rollout will quickly gain traction and increase consumer spend, as well as increase businesses fixed broadband penetration, which, at its current rate of 62 percent, is below that of its peers," says Emily Smith, Research Analyst at Pyramid. "Opportunities will present themselves more strongly after 2013, when the island-wide free broadband service is transformed into a paid service, when Pyramid expects mobile broadband connectivity services to reach 47 percent by 2015."
"For years, island-wide free Wi-Fi networks and the limited browsing capacity of handsets held back users from fully utilizing 3G services, Smith explains. Today, a wider selection of smartphones and higher mobile broadband speeds are changing this situation. In addition, the rapid pace of smartphone adoption means that more and more mobile subscribers will be increasing their mobile data service usage. "Both of these causes will lead to strong mobile data growth through 2015," she adds.
The strong mobile broadband and Internet growth is creating opportunities in an otherwise mature market. "Growing interest and usage of these services is and must continue to be accompanied by continuous network improvement, the launch of innovative devices and service innovation, especially with respect to content," notes Smith. "All operators are being aggressive in all three areas, and competition will be fierce. Furthermore, all three mobile operators over the past year have invested in building out fiber backhaul to increase bandwidth," she adds.
