The Teradata Active Enterprise Data Warehouse platform continues to meet the real-time enterprise-wide data warehouse demands of high performance, service level goals, mission critical availability, and investment protection for the lowest total cost of ownership in its class. Designed with robust workload management capabilities, this system can manage the toughest, most demanding strategic and operational workloads for global customers. It delivers real-time intelligence into the hands of front-line as well as strategic decision makers while supporting a large number of concurrent users. This is made possible by the powerful workload management capabilities of the Teradata Active System Manager software, allowing operational service level goals to be met consistently in a mixed workload environment.
Differentiated market leading capabilities
The new Teradata Active Enterprise Data Warehouse platform is differentiated by these key elements.
- Data warehouse performance boosted 65 percent – This platform provides real value to customers by best exploiting the new Intel® Nehalem Quad Core processor with hyper-threading technology and integrated memory controllers. The combination of processor enhancements, expanded main memory, and a faster data storage subsystem enables 65 percent higher performance for the node, the basic Teradata processing element. Teradata system performance is linearly scaled by adding nodes. Customers may select the 64-bit Linux SLES 10 or Windows Server operating system.
- Improvement of 30 percent in data throughput – Teradata Enterprise Storage 6844 provides up to a 30 percent performance improvement in data throughput. The storage system's scalable and flexible design along with the unique Teradata Virtual Storage software enables customers to configure both 146-gigabyte and 300-gigabyte drives to efficiently store data to meet the varied data usage patterns of business intelligence solutions.
- Increase of 2.5X in processor interconnect bandwidth speed – The enhanced Teradata BYNET® subsystem, the key high-speed network between all processes in the Teradata massively parallel architecture, now delivers a two and one half times increase in individual linkage speed over the previous generation. BYNET continues to offer customers high system availability with redundant components, guaranteed message delivery, and increased query performance with in-network sort and merge capability. With 15 years of continuous innovation, Teradata ensures that BYNET can scale without limitations and meet the performance needs of future platform generations.
- BAR is 4X faster – The new set of Teradata backup, archive and restore (BAR) products and services provides backup times that are nearly four times faster over the previous BAR solutions. The BAR products and services protect against data loss due to hardware failures, local and geographic disasters, corruption and human error. Fully integrated in the Teradata system architecture, the BAR products and services are enabled by working with the database software in an orchestrated manner. Symantec™ NetBackup™ is a key component for the Teradata storage management and data protection in the BAR solution.
- Investment protection – This platform is the only data warehouse in the industry which can coexist with up to four older generations of platforms within the same system and deliver full performance from all elements. This unique coexistence capability provides chief information officers with flexible growth options while protecting their technology investment. Customers are able to upgrade their platforms for improved performance without doing an expensive floor sweep, which requires the replacement of all hardware platforms.
- Operating expense reduction – It is widely believed that the costs for data center power, cooling, and floor space will soon outpace the cost of the equipment in the data center. The "Green" or sustainability benefits of the Teradata system have become a critical factor to the information technology industry. The dramatic boost in Teradata system performance enables customers to do the same data warehouse work using 60 percent less energy as compared to the Teradata platform of three years ago.
"The Teradata Active Enterprise Data Warehouse is priced to compete at a price equal to or lower than our competitors, when we go head-to-head with systems of equal size, performance workloads and service levels. In keeping with our historical price and performance value leadership, the list price has decreased by almost 50 percent over the past two years for the same unit of performance," said Randy Lea, vice president, product and services marketing. "However, Teradata is committed to competitive pricing that extends beyond the initial acquisition. Teradata offers the lowest total cost of ownership, lower overall operating expense, the smallest number of database support personnel, the industry-leading Teradata Viewpoint management tools, and this platform is delivered ready to plug in and run."
The Teradata Active Enterprise Data Warehouse is now generally available worldwide.
The Teradata Purpose-Built Platform Family offers customers options enabling them to optimize their data warehouse environment for both price and performance. The Teradata Active Enterprise Data Warehouse platform meets the most demanding requirements in the industry. For those who require departmental analytics or have core decision support requirements, Teradata customers can choose the Teradata Data Mart Appliance or the Teradata Data Warehouse Appliance. Customers who have analytical archival needs can now load historical data, typically off-loaded to tape, into the Teradata Extreme Data Appliance and directly query it for analytics or compliance requirements, at a very low cost.
In mid-2010, Teradata will be adding a new Teradata Extreme Performance Appliance; the industry's first all solid state drive appliance for hyper-analytics giving customers more performance and price options. All of the Teradata Purpose-Built Platform Family members provide enterprise-class capability for today's toughest environments. As customers analyze their analytical needs in developing their data warehouse architecture, Teradata can truly be a trusted advisor that presents customers with a range of architectural options for best price and performance optimization, instead of a single product with a single price from other vendors.
