New Edition of "The First Six Weeks of School" Released
Responsive Classroom's Classic Guide for K-6 Teachers
TURNERS FALLS, Mass., March 12, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Center for Responsive Schools, Inc. (CRS), the developer of the Responsive Classroom approach to education, has published a second edition of The First Six Weeks of School. This highly practical guide helps K–6 teachers lay the groundwork for productive learning during the all-important early weeks of school.
The first edition of the book has sold over 200,000 copies. The new edition features a separate chapter on the crucial first day of school and how to set a positive tone right from the start. Teachers will find concrete tips on preparing the classroom for the beginning of school, ideas for greeting students at the door, activities to help students settle in and feel welcomed, and routines to begin teaching on the first day.
Each of the vital first weeks are organized into three new sections: "Flow of the Day," "Teaching Academics," and "Teaching Discipline." The format is streamlined for easier access and all material is color-coded by grade range.
"Because this book is so important to teachers, we wanted to make sure it reflects our most current thinking about the best ways to structure the beginning of the school year," says Dr. Lora Hodges, Executive Director at Center for Responsive Schools. "The new structure offers significantly more strategies and tips on building a positive community, creating engaging academics, and establishing a safe, challenging, and joyful learning climate."
Teachers' favorite features from the first edition have not been forgotten. The second edition includes detailed sample schedules, ideas for Morning Meeting—greetings, sharings, group activities, and morning messages—resource lists, and the voice of a supportive mentor throughout.
The First Six Weeks of School is priced at $24 and can be purchased from Responsive Classroom: http://www.responsiveclassroom.org/product/first-six-weeks-school
ABOUT THE AUTHORS
This book contains the collective wisdom of educators who have collaborated over thirty-plus years to develop and continually refine the Responsive Classroom approach to teaching. In 2000, Roxann Kriete and Paula Denton authored the first edition. Mike Anderson crafted this second edition by building on the success of the first. He brought in the latest articulations from Responsive Classroom practices, insights from colleagues, and fresh examples of the practices being used in today's classrooms.
