New Apartment-Style Residence Hall, Designed by Angelini & Associates Architects, Opens at Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa
Upperclassmen Facility Focuses on Living-Learning Experience
ANN ARBOR, Mich., Sept. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- (http://www.myprgenie.com) -- Dordt College's newest residence hall, Kuyper Apartments, opened its doors last week to welcome over 190 of its first residents. Designed by Angelini & Associates Architects of Ann Arbor, Michigan, the 64,000-square-foot, $12 million hall sets a precedent for student housing on Dordt's campus. The new facility embraces fundamental principles of environmentally responsible design, incorporating geothermal heating and cooling, energy efficient lighting, and locally sourced materials throughout.
Designed to meet the needs of upperclassmen, the new hall provides 32 apartment-style accommodations for six students each. Features of the residential portion of the hall include three-bedroom apartments with open kitchens and living rooms with expansive prairie views. Study suites, laundry rooms, and a meditation space provide additional shared amenities for residents.
The 5000-square-foot, two-story community space in Kuyper Apartments features a prominent floor-to-ceiling fireplace that anchors the room. This gathering area also houses a stage with lighting and sound for student performances, as well as a student-run coffee shop. The mezzanine accommodates a living-learning classroom during the day hours and acts as extra seating or meeting space during the evening.
The Kuyper Apartments design team includes Angelini & Associates Architects, Hoogendoorn Construction, Inc., Structural Design Inc (sdi), MEP engineer Engineering Design Associates (EDA), and civil engineer DGR.
