NBC Bay Area Announces Addition of Two New Anchors
Janelle Wang To Anchor NBC Bay Area News at 5
Jon Kelley Joins Today In the Bay Weekday Mornings
SAN JOSE, Calif., July 7, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Veteran journalists Janelle Wang and Jon Kelley are joining the NBC Bay Area news team later this month, the station announced today. Wang will anchor "NBC Bay Area News at 5," with co-anchor Raj Mathai, and Kelley will join Laura Garcia-Cannon as co-anchor of the weekday morning news program, "Today In The Bay." Both journalists bring a strong set of skills and experience to the NBC Bay Area newsroom.
Kelley has spent more than 15 years in television journalism, covering news, sports and entertainment in a variety of roles. At the national level, he was an anchor at Fox Sports Network, hosted "The Mole," a prime time reality program that aired on ABC, and has worked as host and correspondent for the successful syndicated program, "Extra." At the local level, he spent eight years at WMAQ-TV, the NBC-owned station in Chicago, where he won numerous awards, including a Midwest Emmy award for an hour-long special highlighting the Chicago Bulls' quest for a fifth championship, the Peter Lisagor Award for Sports Journalism and an Illinois Broadcasters Association Silver Dome Award for Best Sportscast. Before beginning his broadcast journalism career, Kelley played football for the University of Nebraska, and was signed by the Denver Broncos as a free agent.
Wang is a Bay Area native who has worked in San Francisco television news for the past eight years. She has been a journalist at stations in California and Oregon, most recently at KGO in San Francisco, and has interviewed local and national political leaders like Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton and cultural icons like Oprah Winfrey and Joan Rivers. Wang is fluent in Mandarin – a result of a Bay Area upbringing that included Chinese school – and is a lifelong Giants, 49ers and Sharks fan. She is very involved in cancer awareness and cancer education, and supports bone marrow registry drives.
"We're very happy to add these two strong, experienced journalists to our newsroom," said Jonathan Mitchell, vice president of news for NBC Bay Area. "They join an award winning team that is dedicated to producing the deepest, most thorough newscasts in the Bay Area."
Wang and Kelley will debut in the next few weeks on NBC Bay Area.
