CHARLOTTE, N.C., Feb. 28, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Middle school students in Charlotte will have a special opportunity this week to learn more about space travel from a man who has experienced it first-hand.

As part of NASA Awareness week in Charlotte, N.C., astronaut Lee Morin will speak at Whitewater Middle School on March 3 and 4.
- Thursday, March 3, 3-4 p.m. – Morin will speak to more than 150 teachers at Whitewater Middle School in Charlotte as part of the 3rd annual NASA STEM Educators Workshop Series. The free workshops blend science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) using NASA education resources relating to current and future NASA missions.
- Friday, March 4, 9-10 a.m. – Morin will talk to several hundred students during a school assembly. Morin will talk about his experience in space and the importance of STEM in education.

Morin has been an astronaut since 1996. He logged more than 250 hours in space as a mission specialist on STS-110 in 2002 aboard the space shuttle Atlantis. He received his Ph.D. in microbiology from New York University School of Medicine in 1982 and served as a medical officer and flight surgeon in the Navy.
"This will be a wonderful opportunity for teachers and students," said Whitewater Middle School principal Stephanie Wade. "We are so excited to be able to host this event. It is not every day that we have the opportunity to meet an astronaut."
