Naropa University Launches its 43rd Annual Summer Writing Program
Daily poetry readings are free and open to the public at Naropa's Performing Arts Center
BOULDER, Colo., June 19, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Naropa University's 43rd annual Summer Writing Program (SWP) launched on Sunday, June 11, 2017 welcoming students into its renowned convocation of literary outriders and artists. Yearly, SWP brings acclaimed writers, poets, and performers to Boulder, where they work with students in intensive, intimate workshops. Each of the three weeks' workshops are designed to foster depth and inspire experimentation across genres in MFA Creative Writing candidates' work.
Every Tuesday through Saturday, SWP hosts poetry readings at Naropa's Performing Arts Center (PAC), 2130 Arapahoe Avenue, at 7:30 p.m., all are free & open to the public. These readings are explosive, entertaining events. This year features such luminaries as Eileen Myles, Natalie Diaz, Roger Reeves, Laird Hunt, CA Conrad, Latasha Diggs, Lisa Jarnot, Brenda Coultas, giovanni singleton, Layli Longsoldier, Dawn Lundy Martin, Eleni Sikelianos, Anne Waldman, Ronaldo Wilson and more.
This year's theme, "The New Weathers," centers on naming global devastation wrought in this, the Anthropocene Age, irrefutable evidence of which is woefully evident. The truth is that this world is worth struggling for–and a new world is possible. To bring enlivening energy to writing, activism, and global collaboration; opening categories of resistance–these are some tactics real change will require.
The final two weeks of SWP are still open for noncredit, and students from other institutions and programs can still attend for undergraduate or graduate credit.
Founded by Anne Waldman and the late Allen Ginsberg as part of The Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics, SWP acts as a third semester in Naropa's accredited Creative Writing MFA.
