The cost of education in Canada has increased dramatically over the past decade to the point where many prospective students are effectively locked out of the education system. According to Statistics Canada's Survey of Financial Security, Canadians have close to $30 billion in student loan debt outstanding.
While expected salaries after graduation are not keeping pace with the increases in expenses, the cost of not attaining any post-secondary education is enormous. The Canadian economy is absolutely dependent on having a stream of well-educated workers, which makes it incumbent on every business to do their part in making education more accessible.
"My Canada Payday is dedicated to giving back to the community, and we recognize that education is a vital part of developing a healthy and productive society. Our goal is to assist a student in developing the skills required to develop a successful career," said Dale Evans, manager. "Helping individuals in financial distress is what our business is all about, which makes this bursary program a natural fit. We hope that this trial project will be a success and lead to an annual program."
Beyond demonstrating clear financial need, successful applicants will also show leadership skills, academic achievement, a history of community involvement, and a passion for their intended field of study.
All applications will be given thorough consideration; however, students entering into a field related to My Canada Payday's core operations will be given some preference. Applicants are required to submit a 500-word essay, where they can make the case for their program's relevance to the financial industry as well as any unique circumstances that they believe make them deserving of the bursary.
The application deadline for the 2014 bursary will be October 1, 2014. All applicants will be notified of their status by November 1, 2014 and the disbursement date will be December 1, 2014.
Details on applying for the bursary can be found at http://www.mycanadapayday.com/community_involvement.html or email [email protected].
