Muzzy Lane Software Awarded Library Of Congress Grant To Develop Kid Citizen
Leading Game-Based Learning Company Tapped to Develop Mobile Apps for K-5
NEWBURYPORT, Mass., Sept. 14, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Muzzy Lane Software today announced it has received a grant from the Library of Congress to develop Kid Citizen, a set of online and mobile learning products for early grades focused on Congress and civic participation.
"It is wonderful to have the support of America's national library behind our efforts to combine game-based technology with valuable civics content to advance student learning," said Bert Snow, VP of Design, Muzzy Lane.
Snow will serve as principal investigator for the grant, with Drs. Ilene and Michael Berson, Professors in the Department of Teaching and Learning in the College of Education at the University of South Florida, serving as co-principal investigators. Muzzy Lane was one of three organizations selected by the Library of Congress from thirty-three proposals.
"We are excited to work with all three of the organizations selected to develop the online interactives and mobile apps," said Lee Ann Potter, Director of Educational Outreach, Library of Congress. "The proposals they submitted reflected both creativity and enthusiasm for providing students with engaging tools to learn about Congress and civic participation."
The Teaching with Primary Sources program is the Library of Congress's premier educational outreach program for teachers. The goal of the program is to provide professional development for teachers focused on enhancing their ability to embed digitized primary sources from the Library of Congress into inquiry-based instruction that builds student literacy, critical thinking skills and content knowledge.
The learning products developed by Muzzy Lane will provide authentic, age-appropriate interaction with primary source materials, based on strong research and pedagogy, engaging children to explore civics and government concepts through historical sources, and connect what they find with their daily lives.
The resulting mobile and online resources will be freely available for use by educators, and the tools and templates will enable users to add new content and create new episodes for use in instruction.
