NEW YORK, Nov. 17, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Mutual of America announced the recipients of its 2016 Community Partnership Award, which annually honors the outstanding contributions that nonprofit organizations, in partnership with public, private and other social sector organizations, make to society.
This year's recipient of the Governor Hugh L. Carey Award, presented to the national award-winning program, is Harlem RBI's East Harlem Center for Living and Learning. To create this innovative community initiative, Harlem RBI forged a unique partnership with Jonathan Rose Companies and the New York City Housing Authority, along with Civic Builders and the New York City Department of Education. East Harlem Center for Living and Learning combines a 450-seat public charter school, 89 units of affordable housing, office space, a community center and a public park for inner-city youth and their families living in an underresourced neighborhood.
Each of the 2016 recipients is delivering solutions to critical challenges facing our country, including helping combat veterans and first responders who are living with post-traumatic stress disorder, assisting refugees who are transitioning to life in a new culture, addressing food insecurity and homelessness, and providing access to financial counseling and education.
