Move to Urge Coca Cola, McDonalds and Visa to Use Their Influence and Power as Olympic Sponsors to End Canada's Latest Olympic Sport: The Killing of Hundreds of Thousands of Baby Seals for Their Fur
NEW CANAAN, Conn., Feb. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- As the world's attention focuses on the Vancouver site of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, Canadian fishermen are celebrating another sport on Hay Island in Eastern Nova Scotia – the indiscriminate killing of baby seals, solely for their pelts, who are only weeks old. This is the largest massacre of marine mammals in the world. The seals have their skulls smashed in or are shot at point blank range. Canada's Department of Fisheries and Oceans will allow 2,220 baby seals to be slaughtered on Hay Island alone – and as many as 350,000 more as the hunt continues in Newfoundland.
Prominent animal welfare activist and member of the National Council of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) Cathy Kangas, CEO of the PRAI Beauty Group, urges the public to ask Coca Cola, McDonalds, Visa, Samsung, Panasonic and Omega watches, as Olympic sponsors, to bring pressure to bear on the Canadian government.
"American multi-international companies need to tell the Canadian government they will not tolerate this barbaric practice of slaughtering baby seals for their fur," said Ms. Kangas. "Until this happens, American consumers of Coca Cola, McDonalds, Omega watches and Visa cards should urge these consumer product companies that they don't want them to back the Canadian Winter Olympics by helping sponsor this horrific hunt. Panasonic and Samsung are also two other major Olympic sponsors." Ms. Kangas also recommends calling and urging these companies to use their pressure and influence as Olympic sponsors to end this senseless slaughter. Already the EU has joined with the rest of the world to show their huge displeasure at this largest slaughter of marine mammals on earth.
HSUS plans to film and photograph graphic images of the slow, painful death of baby seals and will then juxtapose them against the pageantry and athletic prowess of the Winter Olympics.
"The Canadian government is hypocritical in presenting Canada as a pristine winter wonderland when a little more than 1,000 miles away, the blood of baby seals is turning the ice floes red," said Ms. Kangas.
