Mount Ida College To Undertake Unprecedented Building And Restoration Plan This Summer; Major Campus Improvements To Benefit Residential And Commuter Students
NEWTON, Mass., March 11, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Mount Ida College is pleased to announce that it is undertaking a major facility development and improvement plan, including restoration of century-old Shaw Hall, on its 72-acre campus this summer. Construction commences in May, with most projects scheduled for completion by August. The Board of Trustees, together with the President, recently approved the plan, which focuses on improving the resources and quality of campus for residential and commuter students, most significantly as follows:
- A new student center, a first for Mount Ida, will occupy all three floors of Carlson Hall, an existing building which serves as a gateway to the campus, offering multiple dining choices, recreation and study areas, indoor and outdoor patio seating, a convenience store and market and more;
- A new student fitness center with state-of-the-art fitness and weight equipment, an extension of the existing Athletic Center;
- A complete reconstruction of the largest residence hall on campus, Malloy Hall, which also will feature new student lounges, a cafe, and study areas on each floor; and
- Expansion of certain academic facilities, most notably, the dental hygiene center, to better meet enrollment demand for our dental hygiene program and other science programs.
Mount Ida College President Barry Brown commenting on the building plan noted, "Mount Ida is experiencing tremendous growth in its career-focused programs. We are building to meet that demand to provide our students with the best campus facilities possible to match our superb majors and program offerings. When the project is completed this fall, our residential and commuter students like never before will realize a high quality, cutting-edge academic and campus experience."
The $12.0 million building and restoration plan will be financed through a mix of bond revenue, operating income and gifts. Architectural design and construction of the new facilities including the restoration of the College's century-old manor house, Shaw Hall, will be led by two nationally renowned firms which specialize in college and university projects, Beacon Architectural Associates and Imai Keller Moore Architects.
