Motorola's WBR 700 Series 2nd Generation LTE eNodeB Provides Unprecedented Capacity to Deliver Enhanced Mobile Broadband Experiences
4G LTE-Advanced-capable platform delivers better subscriber experience and lower total cost of ownership for operators in an eco-friendly, compact unit
BARCELONA, Spain, Feb. 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- -- Mobile World Congress -- The Networks business of Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today announced its newest and highest capacity LTE solution, the WBR 700 Series LTE eNodeB. The WBR 700 Series, which is Motorola's 4th generation orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) solution and its 2nd generation LTE platform, offers unprecedented capacity and density in a 1U rack that is one of the smallest and most energy efficient eNodeBs in the industry.
The LTE-Advanced-capable design, which will be able to accommodate 3GPP Release 9 and 10 based upon the current specification, and extra capacity of Motorola's WBR 700 Series eNodeB also offers network investment protection and a simple software upgrade path to 4G. The addition of this industry-changing eNodeB is further evidence of Motorola's readiness to deliver commercial LTE networks to the market.
"Wireless operators want a true mobile broadband network that can support more data connections and longer data sessions while delivering better quality of service and lower total cost of ownership. The WBR 700 Series is built for that exact purpose – to deliver a superior mobile broadband experience," said Bruce Brda, senior vice president, Motorola Networks. "Operators also are looking for an experienced partner to deploy their 4G solutions. Motorola, with our years of OFDM experience and success in WiMAX, meets that criteria."
Motorola's new WBR 700 Series will support FDD as well as TD-LTE solutions in a wide variety of frequencies from 700MHz to 2.6GHz. It boasts an LTE baseband that has up to four times the capacity of the average LTE baseband currently on the market, enabling the deployment of multiple antenna schemes that support higher throughput to deliver superior mobile broadband experiences. For example, Motorola's initial performance tests show the WBR 700 Series in a 4TxX8Rx TD-LTE configuration will offer up to 200 percent higher throughput compared to an average 2TxX2Rx LTE eNodeB.
Leveraging the high capacity of the WBR700 Series, operators will be able to deploy multiple LTE carriers at different frequencies. This additional capacity offers operators greater flexibility as well as investment protection as they roll out LTE across their network.
The WBR 700 Series builds upon Motorola's more than 10 years of OFDM experience and multiple antenna technology expertise, along with its extensive field experience in wireless broadband, to provide a spectrally efficient and modular design that supports a large variety of site deployment scenarios.
Motorola's WBR 700 features the tight integration of Motorola's proprietary intelligent scheduler, the master controller of the radio access network that prioritizes voice and data traffic to further improve sector throughput and performance at the edge of a cell. The advanced receiver design, zero foot print architecture, compact and significantly low power consumption baseband, and advanced SON design of the WBR 700 Series all contribute to an up to 30 percent lower total cost of ownership for operators compared to an average 2x2 eNodeB.
The WBR 700 Series, scheduled to be available at the end of Q2 this year, will be featured in the LTE cafe at Motorola's stand (Hall 8, 8A51) during Mobile World Congress 2010.
Motorola's LTE Solution
Motorola is one of the few vendors in the industry that has expertise in, has committed to, and is investing in FDD-LTE and TD-LTE as well as WiMAX. Together these technologies offer a complementary set of options to deliver the 4G solutions that today's operators will need to meet the needs of data hungry users and make a profit in the process.
Motorola is leveraging its OFDM expertise and years of success in WiMAX in the development of its LTE solution. Motorola's first commercial LTE deployments will be based on its third-generation WiMAX products that have been proven and field-hardened and for which algorithms have been optimized to deliver the best performance in a real-world environment.
Motorola's LTE solution is comprised of its OFDM broadband platform and a selection of radio options that include multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and smart antennas. It also features Motorola's award winning advanced self-organizing network (SON) solution. Motorola's WBR 700 Series LTE eNodeB offers flexible deployment options with frame based-mounted radios, remote radio heads and tower top radios to support a wide variety of LTE deployment scenarios across numerous spectrum bands to meet the needs of the global market.
Also included in Motorola's LTE portfolio are its evolved packet core (EPC) solution - the Wireless Broadband Core (WBC) 700 portfolio, backhaul, network management solutions, video solutions that monetize LTE investment, and a complete portfolio of professional services. The Motorola WBC 700 is comprised of Motorola's award winning mobility management entity (MME), packet and serving gateways (P-GW and S-GW), and a policy and charging rules function server (PCRF).
