LIBERTYVILLE, Ill. and RESTON, Va., April 21, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Motorola Mobility, Inc. (NYSE: MMI) and NII Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: NIHD) today announced they have agreed to extend a supplier agreement in which Motorola will supply iDEN handsets to NII Holdings through 2014. The continuation of this agreement reflects both companies' commitment to iDEN technology as a leading platform for Push to Talk services.
For the past 14 years, NII Holdings and Motorola have partnered to provide iDEN services to subscribers in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Peru. Under the NEXTEL brand, NII Holdings is the largest iDEN network operator in the Latin American region, serving more than nine million subscribers. Its leadership in iDEN deployments reflects the reliability and quality of services offered.
"We are committed to offering our subscribers differentiated wireless services and with this agreement we continue to deliver on that promise with exciting and innovative devices and services," said Greg Santoro, executive vice president and chief marketing and strategy officer, NII Holdings. "Push to Talk functionality continues to be a primary mode of instant communication for millions in the Latin American region, and we are pleased to continue this fast, flexible and affordable service."
This extension expands the scope of the supply agreement to also provide a range of new handsets and services for NII's next-generation networks including PTT and 3G enabled handsets and exciting devices and accessories, such as the Motorola XOOM tablet.
"Motorola Mobility and NII have enjoyed a longstanding partnership and we are encouraged by the strong growth of their customer base," said Mark Shockley, senior vice president, general manager, Global Go-to-Market, Motorola Mobility. "Devices featuring PTT technology remain an integral part of our overall portfolio and we look forward to working with NII to bring both iDEN and next-generation products to market in the future."
A pioneer in iDEN technology, Motorola Mobility has been manufacturing devices that utilize the PTT platform for nearly two decades. As the iDEN platform expands globally, Motorola Mobility will continue to provide innovative handset solutions that meet a wide range of users' communications needs.
