Mom entrepreneur tackles crisis in early childhood education with free WeeSchool app
DENVER, Oct. 11, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Launching today on both iOS and Android platforms, WeeSchool aims to increase positive outcomes for babies and toddlers by providing new parents with the tools and resources they need to be engaged and knowledgeable "teachers" to their youngest children. Created by Baby Einstein founder Julie Clark, the WeeSchool App combines child development information, tips and activities for daily play, music, eBooks and visual content for babies and toddlers with an easy-to-follow, research-based curriculum for parents. And it's completely free.
The lack of quality preschool education in the United States is a well-known problem, and Early Head Start programs often don't reach rural or low-income areas. In fact, fewer than half (48 percent) of poor children are ready for school at age 5, and the inequality that begins before kindergarten lasts a lifetime. Those who don't receive any preschool education start off a year behind in math and verbal skills, and don't catch up. Yet research shows that the sooner children participate in early childhood education, the better their long-term outcomes. Clark believes that educating parents on how to interact with and teach their own kids at home, from birth, is the first step in solving this crisis.
"It was important for me to make the app free," says Clark. "Free access levels the playing field, giving every child – regardless of family income level – the benefit of a strong start in life." In a time when caregivers feel overwhelmed by parenting information from a multitude of sources, WeeSchool's strength is in its comprehensive, age-specific insights. Clark hopes to make the app available in Spanish soon.
"Our mission is to help all parents raise happier, healthier babies by encouraging smart play. It's how children learn best." Mindful parenting is at the heart of what Clark believes. "A mindful parent pays attention, takes the time to be engaged, and does their best to connect emotionally, physically and intellectually with their child. They understand the importance of early experiences in life and how they positively impact a child's developing brain."
