Over 709,000 votes were cast in support of the 2010 contestants, reflecting immense interest and supportiveness for moms building businesses at the same time they tend to their families.
"There's been a sea change among moms as they've come to realize that adding entrepreneurship to their lives brings exhilaration and immense gratification, not to mention supplemental—sometimes primary—income to their families in these dicey economic times," says Rich Sloan, chief startupologist and co-founder of StartupNation.
Former Navy Pilot-turned-gluten free advocate, Ms. Karen Fine writes the Mom Cooks Gluten Free website (recipes/stories/product reviews), has authored three children's picture books on healthy eating and co-founded The Gluten Free Foundation (http://www.jackshouse.org/). Her fourth children's book and first cookbook are due out in 2011.
Ms. Fine's passion for gluten free living began when her oldest son almost died in the hospital while she was in labor with her youngest son. "My son was suffering from intense pain and intestinal damage due to an autoimmune disease called celiac disease," says Ms. Fine. "There is no known cure, but his body healed completely on a gluten free diet. I also choose to live gluten free and have never felt better."
Gluten is the protein found in wheat, rye, barley and oats and makes millions of people ill worldwide. After watching her son's amazing recovery, Ms. Fine began researching and writing to help others learn to love living gluten free. In addition to appearing on television to talk about gluten free living and celiac disease, Ms. Fine visits schools, libraries and book stores to read her books and talk to children about making healthy food choices.
