Miss Teen Arizona International, Garin Harris, Crowned Miss Teen International 2016
Harris pays tribute to her Mother by supporting programs and services for those suffering from chronic pain throughout her reign
ROANOKE, Va., Aug. 2, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Miss Teen Arizona International, Garin Harris, 17, of Yuma, Ariz., was crowned Miss Teen International 2016, Saturday, July 30 at the Annual Miss Teen International Pageant held in Jacksonville, Fla. The three-hour event, held at the Moran Theater at the Times Union Center for Performing Arts, featured nearly 35 contestants from around the world competing in four categories, including interview, fitness-wear, fun fashion and evening gown.
The International Pageants system emphasizes community service and each contestant's competition score is based on their knowledge of and work with their platform. Throughout her reign, Harris will support the U.S. Pain Foundation as an official spokesperson and through the organization she founded, Dancing through the Pain. Dancing through the Pain focuses on teaching stretching and dance moves that help with pain management, as well as educating sufferers and their families about resources available through the U.S. Pain Foundation.
Harris chose her platform because her mother had a life-changing reaction to a flu shot that left her paralyzed for a year, and today, reliant on a cane or wheelchair, while living in constant pain.
"My Mother was a social worker and received flu shots every year; her seventh shot was defective and left her with physical disabilities," said Harris. "I understand the effect chronic pain has on the person and their families and it's my life's mission to continue to help my Mom and others who suffer with chronic pain. I'm thrilled to be crowned Miss Teen International 2016 because I know my new role will help me expand my mission internationally, and as a team, we can make positive change in peoples' lives who are suffering with chronic pain."
The Miss Teen International Pageant is the only platform- based system and is owned and operated by Roanoke, Va.-based International Pageants, Inc., which also operates the Miss and Mrs. International competitions.
