Midwest Orthopaedics At Rush Seeks Patients For Study Of New Artificial Cervical Disc

CHICAGO, April 9, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush (MOR) is seeking Illinois patients with cervical radiculopathy (a condition where there is compressed nerves in the neck area of the spine) for a clinical study evaluating the safety and effectiveness of the Spinal Kinetic M6-C artificial cervical disc. The Spinal Kinetic M6-C is an advanced generation disc designed to replicate the flexibility and motion of the natural human disc.

The study is designed to compare the use of the Spinal Kinetics M6-C cervical disc implant with fusion (fusing discs together) for the treatment of symptomatic cervical radiculopathy. It is being conducted at Rush University Medical Center. The surgeon will first remove the patient's damaged spinal disc and replace it with the new artificial disc. During the surgery, X-ray technology is used to ensure the proper placement of the study device.

Eligible patients are 18 to 75 who have cervical radiculopathy, have failed nonsurgical treatment and haven't had surgery for the condition. Patients should be available for follow-up visits over a 24-month period. Interested and eligible patients should contact: Susan Dvojack, 312.942.6689.

About the Physicians

Dr. Edward Goldberg, the principal investigator for the study, has been an attending spine surgeon at Rush University Medical Center for 23 years. He is an assistant professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Rush and has fellowships in cervical spine surgery from the University of Miami and University of Marseilles in France. He was selected into the "Leading Physicians of the World Society." Dr. Howard An has held the inaugural Morton International Endowed Chair position at Rush University Medical Center since 1997, and is Director of Spine Surgery and the Spine Fellowship Program at Rush. Dr. Frank Phillips is listed as one of the top 28 spine surgeons in the country by Orthopaedics this Week. He has been the principal investigator on numerous cervical disc replacement FDA trials and has been published extensively.
