Midwest Bone And Joint Institute Becomes First In The State To Offer Total Hip Replacement In Outpatient Setting
Minimally invasive procedure shortens recovery time by 80 percent; reduces costs by 66 percent
ST. CHARLES, Ill., Dec. 15, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Patients suffering from hip pain now have a minimally invasive alternative to traditional hip replacement surgery, dramatically reducing both recovery time and cost. Dr. Shawn W. Palmer, of Midwest Bone and Joint Institute recently performed the state's first outpatient anterior approach hip replacement surgery at Valley Ambulatory Surgery Center in St. Charles, Ill.
During surgery, the hip is replaced from the anterior (front) side without cutting any muscle, allowing patients to go home just hours after the procedure and resume normal activities such as driving within just a few days. In comparison, patients who undergo traditional hip replacement typically spend up to four days recovering in the hospital and many require extended therapy. In addition to reducing post-operative pain, the surgery costs up to 66 percent less when performed in an ambulatory surgery center (ASC) – often saving patients thousands of dollars.
Betsy Evett of Santa Rosa Beach, Fla., recently traveled to St. Charles to undergo the procedure after researching the cost and benefits.
"I was walking within three hours of surgery and off my pain medication after two days," said Evett. "The cost difference was substantial; I saved more than half the cost of having the procedure done at my local hospital, yet received first-class care."
According to Dr. Palmer, who has been performing the procedure in a hospital setting for the past five years, advances in pain control and minimally-invasive surgery make it possible to offer the surgery in an outpatient setting. Though not every patient is a candidate for the procedure, the benefits are significant.
"Patients not only experience less pain and recover better at home, but also appreciate the dramatic reduction in cost as many begin to bear more responsibility for their own healthcare expenses," said Dr. Palmer. "We're pleased to be among just a handful of providers throughout the country offering this life-changing surgery in an ASC setting."
Outpatient surgery centers like Valley Ambulatory Surgery Center offer patients high quality medical care in a convenient, safe environment that is more cost effective than full-service hospitals. Because of lower overhead costs, patients can expect significant savings compared with the cost of surgery at a local hospital. In addition to containing healthcare costs, this provides lower out-of-pocket costs to patients.
