Michigan's Deployment of PrePass(R) Truck Safety Technology is Reducing Fuel Consumption and Emissions; Boosting Industry Efficiency and Road Safety

MONROE, Mich., May 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Over the next decade, Michigan's adoption of PrePass® truck technology will save the trucking industry and the Michigan manufacturers they serve nearly $25 million in operational costs and will reduce greenhouse gases and related emissions by 5,000 metric tons, in addition to improving safety for the motoring public.

"PrePass enables qualified trucks to comply electronically with state safety, registration and weight requirements at highway speeds using an in-cab transponder," stated Lt. Col. Eddie L. Washington Jr., deputy director of the Michigan State Police.  "This cuts down on weigh station traffic and allows State Police motor carrier officers to better focus their efforts on those trucks most likely to be non-compliant."

PrePass is a sophisticated technology that enables qualified commercial truckers to comply electronically with Michigan's weight, safety and credential requirements at highway speeds.  Carrier participation is strictly voluntary and eligibility is subject to strict safety qualifications.  PrePass has been operational in Michigan since November 2009.

By eliminating weigh station stops and idling in queues, PrePass saves the trucking industry time, money and fuel and enables state inspection staff to direct their efforts toward the carriers that require the most attention.  The public also benefits from improved highway safety and reduced greenhouse gases.

Since its deployment in 1997, PrePass has saved carriers more than $2.3 billion in operational costs, including fuel savings of more than 150 million gallons. Based on EPA engine idle reduction estimates, since its inception in 1995, PrePass has reduced emissions by more than 330 thousand metric tons.
