Mexico's Economic, Demographic and Social Advances Resulting in Illegal Immigration Decline
Mexicans Prefer Staying Home than Migrating North, as Reported by The New York Times
MEXICO CITY, July 8, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following is being released today by Marca Pais – Imagen de Mexico:
In a recent article by The New York Times, Mexico's impressive advances in education, economy and democracy are making Mexican citizens choose to stay in Mexico rather than migrate north to the United States. MexicoToday's video on YouTube and blog on its website www.mexicotoday.org illustrate the story.
Some of the findings in the article come from Douglas S. Massey, co-director of the Mexican Migration Project at Princeton, who conducted an extensive, long-term study which found that, "For the first time in 60 years, the net traffic [from Mexico to the United States] has gone to zero and is probably a little bit negative."
Another expert, Roberto Newell, a prominent economist, is referenced in a recent blog that per capita gross domestic product and family income have each jumped more than 45 percent over the past ten years. Despite all the depictions of Mexico as "nearly a failed state," Newell argued, "the conventional wisdom is wrong."
Confirming the value of socio-economic progress, some experts like Jeffery S. Passel, a demographer at the Pew Hispanic Center, believe that, "if you have a college degree you're much more likely to stay in Mexico because that is surely more valuable in Mexico."
The decline of immigration from Mexico to the United States has gained much attention since The New York Times story ran, including coverage by Fox News, The Washington Examiner, and The San Diego Union-Tribune..
