MetroCast Expands Capacity and Supports Rich Media Services with Motorola High-Density Downstream Solution

HORSHAM, Pa., May 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today announced that MetroCast, a family-owned cable television operator with more than 100,000 internet subscribers in nine states, will deploy the Motorola BSR 64000 TX32 Decoupled Downstream Module to cost-effectively and efficiently scale its Internet service across its broadband network. Rolling out DOCSIS® 3.0 with the TX32 Decoupled Downstream Module will ultimately provide MetroCast customers access to higher-speed internet tiers supporting rich streaming and potential on-demand services through additional downstream capacity and channel bonded-enabled broadband connectivity.

The growing demand for increased bandwidth – combined with competition – is prompting cable operators to seek cost-effective technologies that deliver a substantial boost to both peak downstream Internet speeds and average downstream capacity available to subscribers. The Motorola TX32 Decoupled Downstream Module enables up to eight times existing peak rate and six times average throughput capacity to MetroCast's existing BSR 64000 chassis. By doing this, Motorola's integrated cable modem termination system (I-CMTS) solution addresses two key business needs for cable operators today: higher speed service rates to attract new customers and greater capacity to alleviate network congestion and maintain customer satisfaction.

As the highest-density, integrated downstream technology on the market, the Motorola TX32 supports 32 QAM channels in a single slot within the Integrated Motorola BSR 64000 CMTS/Edge Router. The solution enables cable operators to deliver significantly increased bandwidth to new DOCSIS 3.0 modems, such as Motorola's next-generation SURFboard®  SB6120, SBV6220 and SBG6580 cable and digital voice modems and integrated gateways, while preserving operator investment in legacy DOCSIS 1.x and 2.0 modems.
