MDRejuvena, Inc. announces publication of a clinical study that demonstrates the ability of sodium copper chlorophyllin complex (Phytochromatic MD® Complex) to repair photoaged skin
SAN DIEGO, Aug. 16, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- MDRejuvena®, Inc., a private company focused on skin health, announced the publication of the results of a clinical study which demonstrated the ability of sodium copper chlorophyllin complex to repair photodamaged skin. This study, published in the July issue of Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology, demonstrated that the sodium copper chlorophyllin complex, contained in Phytochromatic MD Complex, has the ability to repair photoaged skin by increasing epidermal and dermal hyaluronic acid (HA), and precursors of collagen and elastin.
The statistically significant increase in epidermal HA demonstrated by sodium copper chlorophyllin in this new clinical study is particularly important since epidermal HA has been shown to rapidly decline and disappear as we age. A previous publication of Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology (August 12, 2015) demonstrated that sodium copper chlorophyllin complex is a strong inhibitor of hyaluronidase in vitro. Inhibition of hyaluronidase activity is critical because this natural enzyme breaks down hyaluronic acid (HA), a critical component of the extracellular matrix (ECM) of the skin. The ECM of the skin is responsible for mechanical support, elasticity and hydration of the skin.
"The significant role sodium copper chlorophyllin can play in combatting the effects of skin aging is very exciting," stated Jason Lupton, MD, dermatologist/owner at derm sd. "Loss of hyaluronic acid in the skin with aging contributes to decreased tissue elasticity, loss of hydration and fine lines and wrinkles. Products that have activities to retain or enhance HA are extremely useful in repairing such aged skin."
In the study, titled "Ability of sodium copper chlorophyllin complex to repair photoaged skin by stimulation of biomarkers in human extracellular matrix," skin biopsy samples from the forearms of four healthy middle-aged females with signs of photoaged skin were obtained and samples were analyzed by immunohistochemistry for key biomarkers of aging skin after each subject was treated with a test material consisting of a gel containing a liposomal dispersion of sodium copper chlorophyllin complex 0.05%, a positive control of tretinoin cream 0.025%, and an untreated negative control. Both sodium copper chlorophyllin complex and retinoic acid treated sites were shown to cause increases in all four biomarkers examined. There was no statistical difference in results between sodium copper chlorophyllin and retinol treated sites. Products containing both sodium copper chlorophyllin complex and retinol may provide a dual approach to reversing age-related decreases in hyaluronic acid (HA) in the skin: decreased breakdown of HA through inhibition of hyaluronidase by sodium copper chlorophyllin, and stimulation of HA synthases by retinol.
Salts of copper chlorophyllin complex are naturally-derived compounds with anti-aging, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-redness and wound healing activities. Sodium copper chlorophyllin in a liposomal complex, branded as Phytochromatic MD Complex, is the primary ingredient in the Rejuvaphyl® line of skin care products from MDRejuvena. Copper chlorophyllin has been shown to improve clinical manifestations of photodamage in a study published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology in April 2015. Three products (Rejuvaphyl Rejuvenating Complex, Rejuvaphyl Rejuvenating Complex LS and Rejuvaphyl Rejuvenating Complex HS) are advanced anti-aging formulations designed to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, even skin tone and enhance radiance. These products all contain copper chlorophyllin complex, antioxidants, moisturizers, humectants, and anti-aging peptides in addition to varying concentrations of retinol depending on the patient's skin sensitivity and prior experience with retinol-containing products.
