CHICAGO, March 1, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Tens of thousands of retailers nationwide have rallied together to raise funds to help the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) save and improve the lives of kids and adults with muscular dystrophy, ALS and related life-threatening diseases that severely weaken muscle strength and mobility by participating in the 34th annual MDA Shamrocks program —the nation's largest St. Patrick's Day fundraising program of its kind.
"Every Shamrock you see on the walls and windows of local retailers this spring will help MDA find answers. The dollars we raise together enable MDA to help kids and adults live longer and grow stronger," said MDA President and CEO Steven M. Derks. "Donations made at checkout help us provide the families we serve with access to top clinical care, life-changing summer camps, support programs, groundbreaking research and much more."
With numerous local grocery, home improvement and convenience stores, as well as restaurants, participating in the MDA Shamrocks program, customers and employees can help accelerate progress for individuals whose abilities to move are compromised — including everyday abilities like walking, running, hugging, talking and even breathing — by adding a paper Shamrock (pinup) to their purchase at checkout for just a $1, $5 or a larger contribution. Each Shamrock is then signed by the customer and prominently displayed in each store, symbolizing strength, independence and life for MDA families in each community.
Thousands of retailers across the country have already kicked off their Shamrocks campaigns for 2016, including MDA's largest Shamrocks retailer Lowe's Home Improvement. Together, all participating retailers will raise critical funds in support of MDA's shared mission to find research breakthroughs across diseases; care for kids and adults from day one; and empower families with services and support in hometowns across America.
