May 9th Declared National Foodies Day

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., April 12, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The online food magazine, StPetersburgFoodies.com, has announced the inaugural National Foodies Day to be celebrated on May 9, 2017.
For a Federal holiday to be declared, we need an Act of Congress to be signed by the President. However, just in the food area alone, there are literally hundreds of "food holidays". For example, today (April 12th) is National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day. By what authority are these holidays created? Apparently none really, and nobody seems to mind as many restaurants and individuals alike celebrate them. For example, Central Melt (685 Central Ave, St. Petersburg, FL 33701) is giving away free grilled cheese roll ups from 2-4pm, or until they run out.
StPetersburgFoodies.com concentrates their publishing solely on the restaurant and food scene in St. Petersburg, FL. However, when Co-Founder & Publisher Kevin Godbee realized that so many people seem to enjoy the food holidays, and that one could just make up their own, and there was not yet a National Foodies Day—he registered the domain and built the website for it.
Godbee quips: "By the powers vested in me by the Internet, I pronounce May 9th National Foodies Day." He continues; "With the foodies movement continuing to grow around the country, we thought it only fitting that there should be a National Foodies Day. We have several of our local St. Pete restaurants already committed to putting out special dishes or a prix fixe menu for the day, and some for the entire week. We're hoping that restaurants around the country will do the same."
The date of May 9th was chosen because that is when StPetersburgFoodies.com Co-Founder & Publisher, Lori Brown created the Facebook Group, St. Petersburg Restaurant Reviews, in 2015. It was just for fun in the beginning, but a little over a year later Brown and Godbee had their new business launched. The two will co-host an event to celebrate the day at Tryst (240 Beach Drive, St. Petersburg, FL 33701) with details to be announced next week.
The National Foodies Day website includes a restaurant finder populated by Google Places. There are recipes as well. Food bloggers can submit their own recipes, and link back to their blog. The website also includes links to food blogs and recipe sites, a calendar with all of the "food holidays" of the year from Foodimentary.com– and a fun part of the site is the Foodies Quiz where you can find out how much of a foodie you really are. Mark your calendars for May 9th.
