Massey Responds to MSHA Press Release Regarding Surprise Inspections
JULIAN, W.Va., April 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Massey Energy Company (NYSE: MEE) today responded to MSHA's press release earlier today entitled "Hazard complaints result in surprise inspections at 3 Massey-owned mines."
Massey confirms that inspections took place at three subsidiaries: Spartan Mining Co.'s Road Fork #51 Mine in Wyoming County, WV; Inman Energy's Randolph Mine in Boone County, WV; and Independence Coal Co.'s Cook Mine in Boone County, WV.
Even though Massey disagrees with some of the citations written, there were conditions found that did not meet industry requirements or Massey standards, which equal or exceed industry requirements. Massey denies that there was a "small fire" at its Randolph Mine.
Massey Energy takes violations of regulatory requirements and Massey requirements seriously and will hold those that violate such requirements accountable.
As the result of the issues found at the Road Fork #51 Mine, one foreman was discharged, one foreman was suspended (who then quit) and two miner operators were suspended. At the Randolph Mine, six miners were discharged, including the supervisor. At the Cook Mine, a miner operator was discharged. These disciplinary actions are in keeping with our culture of accountability and safety first.
All of these actions were taken well in advance of MSHA's press release today.
In addition to the disciplinary actions taken, additional training has been conducted and internal unannounced safety inspections have been increased.
Massey Energy Company, headquartered in Richmond, Virginia, with operations in West Virginia, Kentucky and Virginia, is the largest coal producer in Central Appalachia and is included in the S&P 500 Index.
