LOS ANGELES, May 9, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- IMAX Corporation (NYSE: IMAX) today announced that Marvel's Captain America: Civil War opened with a record-setting $31.3 million on 955 IMAX screens globally, making it the largest opening ever for an IMAX release in May, as well as the third-best IMAX opening for a day-and-date release, including China. Overall, Captain America: Civil War scored the fourth-largest global opening weekend ever in IMAX. To date, Captain America: Civil War has grossed $45 million in IMAX globally.
Domestically, Captain America: Civil War delivered $16 million on 380 IMAX screens. The film's North American debut kicked off with particularly strong presales and continued with sell-outs throughout the weekend.
International IMAX weekend results for Captain America: Civil War reached $15.3 million on 575 IMAX screens. In China, specifically, the film grossed an astonishing $10 million in three days. A few other new markets that saw notable results this weekend include: United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Trinidad, Argentina and Turkey.
"With Captain America: Civil War, Marvel has once again nailed it and, thanks to huge support from our great friends, directors Joe and Anthony Russo, Kevin Feige and team Disney, audiences around the world have embraced the IMAX presentation in this record-setting way," said Greg Foster, Senior Executive Vice President, IMAX Corp. and CEO of IMAX Entertainment. "From the very beginning, the Russos and Marvel have been at the forefront of combining the cutting-edge technology of the ALEXA IMAX 65mm camera with epic storytelling, and we couldn't be more excited to be a part of Captain America: Civil War's release throughout the coming weeks."
Directors Joe and Anthony Russo captured the film's key battle sequence using the new ALEXA IMAX® 65mm cameras, marking the first film to use the new 2D digital cameras developed in partnership between IMAX and ARRI. As a result, only in IMAX® theatres do sequences filmed with these cameras expand vertically to fill more of the IMAX screen, delivering IMAX audiences greater scope and breathtaking image quality. As previously announced, the Russo brothers will shoot the entirety of Marvel's two-part finale — Avengers: Infinity War – Parts 1 & 2 — using a joint customized version of ARRI's new large-format 65mm camera, the Alexa 65.
The IMAX® release of Captain America: Civil War was shown in its digitally re-mastered format, which includes the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience® with proprietary IMAX DMR® (Digital Re-mastering) technology. The crystal-clear images, coupled with IMAX's customized theatre geometry and powerful digital audio, create a unique environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie.
