"Magnus Opus" -- A major exhibit and reception to celebrate heroic sculptures
Richard MacDonald Studios, Ryan Ranch, Monterey
Opening reception October 7th, 6 - 9 PM
Ongoing exhibit at the studio until October 21
MONTEREY, Calif., Sept. 27, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Richard MacDonald (American, b.1946), internationally acclaimed figurative sculptor, will open his studio and foundry to the public for a landmark and unprecedented exhibition of his heroic sculptures entitled Magnus Opus.
The title of the show means "large and important" and perfectly describes this historic collection of twenty larger than life bronze sculptures which have been gathered for the first and only time, under one roof, in addition to almost four decades of the artist's work. These works are known as "heroic" for the grandeur of their scale created by MacDonald to fulfill his own creative vision, many of which have taken 8-10 years each to complete.
"My career has been about breaking down barriers — reviving emotively potent figurative work, and reinstating the beauty of the human form in a time when such values in art were all but lost. This one evening in October will bring you into the creative hub of my world," says MacDonald.
MacDonald's Ryan Ranch studio is impressive in its own right, for it houses every aspect of the creative process; from the artist's studio, to the wax and metal workshops, to an on-site foundry and patina area. For a working sculptor to share his creative sanctuary with the public is a rare opportunity. The event will include self-guided tours, demonstrations, performances from models who inspired many of the sculptures on exhibit — and as the skies darken, the evening will culminate with molten bronze being poured into molds by skilled craftsmen. The sculptor will also unveil his latest heroic The Grand Coda, which will be on permanent exhibition in China. A percentage of the proceeds from the night's event will benefit Make-A-Wish.
Richard MacDonald is considered by many to be the world's preeminent living figurative sculptor. A leading advocate of the neo-figurative movement in the arts, MacDonald's work has been featured in hundreds of solo and group exhibitions and is represented in important collections worldwide. His art is collected by people from all walks of life — from aspiring aficionados to celebrities and heads of state.
