Lockheed Martin to Evaluate Wireless Network Architecture for U.S. Department of Transportation
Network to Connect Vehicles, Roadway Infrastructure and Wireless Devices
GAITHERSBURG, Md., July 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Working with the Department of Transportation, Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) will refine and validate the requirements and architecture of a new communications infrastructure, named IntelliDrive(SM), which will ultimately permit safety and traffic systems to communicate. This 15 month contract is valued at approximately $2.6 million. Leveraging the potentially transformative capabilities of wireless technology to make surface transportation safer, smarter and greener is the goal of the DOT's IntelliDrive(SM) system. IntelliDrive(SM) is a multimodal initiative that aims to enable safe, interoperable networked wireless communications among vehicles, the infrastructure, and passengers' personal communications devices.
"This program leverages our extensive experience in developing wireless network architectures," said Jim Quinn, vice president with Lockheed Martin's Information Systems & Global Solutions-Defense. "We look forward to helping the DOT establish a new vision of preventative vehicle safety and mobility within the United States."
IntelliDrive(SM) will provide the transport connectivity for other program applications among vehicles to enable crash prevention; between vehicles and the infrastructure to enable safety, mobility and environmental benefits; and among vehicles, infrastructure, and wireless devices to provide continuous real-time connectivity to all system users. Under this contract, Lockheed Martin's team will investigate how IntelliDrive communication capabilities could support applications both on and off vehicles related to safety, public services and traffic management and update the overall systems architecture documentation.
Lockheed Martin is partnered with Iteris Inc., a transportation systems engineering company on this contract to provide process-focused systems engineering skills to capture stakeholder's needs and formulate the system concepts and architecture. This team also supported the development and deployment of the National Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Architecture for the U.S. Department of Transportation.
