Location Labs' geofencing technology helps iPhone and Android developers quickly and accurately define virtual boundaries on the phone, or in the cloud, with probability estimates for location accuracy and best-in class battery management. The industry's first geofencing platform is now used in several mobile application areas, such as interactive billboard advertising from CBS Outdoors and Intel, "Store Alerts" in mobile couponing from Cellfire, and social networking applications such as Mayor Maker and Tweet Mover, where developers are able to build on top of location services from Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare. Starting today, any developer can now register for a free developer account to explore the geofencing API and build applications at http://geofence.locationlabs.com.
Location Labs is building on the success of its geofencing platform by adding a powerful Spatial Storage solution. The product provides API access to industry-leading 3rd party location data combined with geofencing, plus the ability to push location and application data to the cloud to run fast spatial context-aware searches. As part of this launch, Location Labs is also announcing the availability of Maponics data sets, which can be used by developers within their location-based services (LBS) applications. Developers can participate in the special beta program by visiting http://storage.locationlabs.com.
"We see so many ways for developers to use our geofence datasets to enhance their mobile apps and drive innovation," said Darrin Clement, CEO of Maponics. "And we love the idea that Location Labs will offer the mobile developer community access to them through their Spatial Storage solution."
The new and industry-leading functionality of Location Labs' Geofencing and Spatial Storage product:
- Creates geofences from the cloud, and makes them available on the phone as a user nears the geofence perimeter
- Creates geofences around standard points-of-interest, neighborhood boundaries, shopping areas, schools and college campuses using data from Maponics and other third-party data providers
- Leverages the cloud service to store location and context, and cut down the time to market
- Performs context-based range searches around a location of interest
- Creates automatic alerts based on a user's location and dwell time around a point of interest
- Understands application usage through Geofence Analytics
"Our goal is to continue to innovate, setting the pace for the development of location technologies and inspiring a whole new category of applications as a result," said Tasso Roumeliotis, CEO of Location Labs. "We are thrilled that our developer partners are able to leverage our expertise in Geofencing and now Spatial Storage, allowing them to focus on creating and offering the most innovative location-aware services."
