FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Oct. 11, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Two local high school boys have started Sunshine Gameday Incorporated, a 501(c)(3) not for profit. The organization's mission is to bring underserved and disadvantaged youths to professional sporting events throughout South Florida. Ben Myerow, a junior at University School at NSU and Ari Zebersky, a junior at Posnack developed the idea for Sunshine Gameday together.
Ben and Ari wanted a way to give back to their community. Naturally, their mutual appreciation for professional sports became the catalyst for their charitable venture. It dawned on them that they could give back to their local community by bringing South Florida kids to sporting events who otherwise may not have the chance to attend.
"It seemed like a challenge. It was not easy at first to understand the steps involved in getting an organization like this started from scratch," said, Myerow. He further added, "Working alongside my close friend, Ari, is making it fun for both of us." The pair is raising donations through a GoFundMe campaign and are soliciting donations of cash and sporting event tickets. They are currently working with a handful of community organizations to bring their kids to the games. Zebersky said, "We have a lot of work to do: gather food, arrange buses, and hopefully some professional athlete meet and greets for the kids. I know it won't be easy, but we are excited to show what two high school students can do."
The teenagers will be setting up a volunteer network at their respective schools and hope one day to expand the idea to other schools in South Florida. "When we started this, there was nobody really doing this anywhere, we looked locally and on the internet and found that it is a pretty unique idea." stated Myerow. So far in the first month, the organization has successfully brought a group of teens from Jafco in Sunrise and from the 505 Teen Center in Delray Beach.
When asked, Ben's father, Dean Myerow stated, "I see history repeating itself, because I started a local chapter of a fraternity with Ari's dad, when we were in college. I am beaming at how hard they are working to get this off the ground."
