Local and International Elementary Students Go for Gold in JetToy Olympics at SAE World Congress

DETROIT, March 30 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Several hundred elementary students will go for the gold April 14 – and they'll learn about engineering principles in the process –  when they compete in the JetToy Olympics at the SAE 2010 World Congress at Cobo Center.

The event begins in Macomb Hall at 9 a.m. and will finish with the awards ceremony at 1:30 p.m.

Teams of four students will work together to construct a JetToy supplied by SAE International's A World in Motion® (AWIM) program. The students will build the balloon-powered JetToys and then compete for various distance and accuracy awards.

Schools currently registered to participate include:

• St. John the Evangelist School- Fenton, Mich.
• St. Edith School -Livonia, Mich.
• Our Lady of Good Counsel School- Plymouth, Mich.
• St. Michael School- Livonia, Mich.
• Detroit Public Schools: Emerson Elementary, Logan Elementary, Greenfield Union Elementary, McFarlane Elementary, McColl Elementary, Maybury Elementary and O.W. Holmes Elementary
• Plymouth/Canton Community Schools: Edna M Allen School (Plymouth, Mich.), Thomas Workman Elementary School (Canton, Mich.)
• Cooper Upper Elementary School- Westland, Mich.
• Wisdom International School- Nashik, India

AWIM brings hands-on science, technology, engineering and math education to students from kindergarten through high school graduation.

It is the fourth year for the JetToy Olympics at Cobo Center. What began as an event of just 28 students in 2007 grew to 500 last year.
