ORANGE Flags on the Coastal town, "Tsunami Disaster Prevention" Becoming Part of Everyday Life
--2016: Aichi Prefecture (Tahara City), Shizuoka Prefecture (Shimoda City), and Kochi Prefecture (Kochi City), the Seas Will Be Filled With Orange--
In the Pacific coastal regions of Japan, tsunami disasters by the Nankai Trough Mega Earthquake are anticipated. The #beORANGE will hold events in an effort to raise approximately 100 orange flags* along the coastal town or coastlines. (These are located on tsunami evacuation buildings, schools or apartments. All terms and locations are based on the hazard map of each region.)
Schedule:
August 23rd (Tuesday): Tahara City, Aichi Prefecture
September 3rd (Saturday) & September 4th (Sunday): Shimoda City, Shizuoka Prefecture
October (Tentative): Kochi City, Kochi Prefecture
If the "Tsunami disaster prevention" is familiar, evacuation of people will accelerate, leading to possible prevention of secondary damage.
Based on this idea, #beORANGE will build a structure which the local government, administrative authority and the community will be able to implement and continue the Tsunami Disaster Prevention Training in their regular disaster prevention training. It will also formulate the structure so it could be easily expanded to other regions which anticipate potential tsunami disaster.
Orange is the Color of Disaster Prevention
Orange is said to be the antagonistic color of blue and has the highest visibility for people who enjoy marine activities and for people who live in the coastal areas.
Also the color orange has meanings "to never give up", "learn by taking actions" and "sharing joy"; at the same time, the color represents shock and trauma. Because people are shocked by the threat of disaster, it is necessary for us to "to never give up", "learn by taking actions" and "sharing joy".
First in the World Project for Continuous Coexistence of People and Ocean, Starting from Japan
Building a breakwater sometimes referred to as the "Great Wall of China" because of its 10 meters height, Tarou Town, Iwate Prefecture was famous as a Tsunami Disaster Prevention Town. However, in March 2011, this town was severely damaged by the Tsunami of the Great East Japan Earthquake.
Currently, along the coastlines of Sanriku, including Tarou Town, a "Mega Breakwater" is about to be built, which will have a total distance of about 400 kilometers.
Whenever there is damage caused by tsunamis, we build breakwaters.
Countermeasures alone, will result in the decline of a coexisting culture with the ocean and will dilute people's awareness of disaster prevention. Then, the same tragedy might happen again.
Bousai Girl wishes to put an end to disaster prevention which is just a repetition, doing the same thing over and over again.
"TSUNAMI" is now a global term.
Japan, as a country which suffered multiple tsunami disasters, has a mission to lead the formulation of a "structure where people and ocean will be able to continue to coexist" and propose it as a "new and simple tsunami disaster prevention model", nationwide and globally. This is the reason to start our project.
Bousai Girl will continue to deliver the New and Simple Tsunami Disaster Prevention Model realized by the "#beORANGE" project; throughout Japan and to the world.
