This special event, entitled 'An Evening of Dinner and Song with Larry Gatlin,' will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 5th at Legacy Hall in the Jack B. Kelley Student Center on the WTAMU Campus. A meet-and-greet with this world-renowned artist will be prefaced before dinner at 6:30 pm. Gatlin's country-pop performance of his well-known repertoire will highlight the evening.
"Gatlin started singing as a young man at his church in Seminole, Texas," explained Bledsoe, recently on the weekly Motormouth Podcast, show sponsored by Street Toyota and Street Volkswagen of Amarillo, Texas. "He sang on his local radio station too," says Bledsoe. Gatlin is best know for his musical hits with his group Larry Gatlin & the Gatlin Brothers. Gatlin joined the Imperials, a gospel group while at the University of Houston. "That's when he met up with Dottie West and things started to skyrocket for him," says Bledsoe. Gatlin secured a solo deal with Monument Records in 1973. A prolific season of albums and Top-20 hits soon followed. The Gatlin Brother's song All the Gold in California was released under the Columbia label.
Broken Lady, released in 1975 was Gatlin's second big hit on the Hot Country Songs chart at number 5. This song won him a Grammy award in 1976 for Best Country Song and has also been recorded by Dottie West.
