MUNICH, NEUBIBERG, Germany and ANCONA, Italy, Oct. 10, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Lantiq, a leading supplier of broadband access and home networking technologies, today announced the first commercially available reverse powered Fiber to the Distribution Point (FTTdp) solution, which uses standard fiber and copper wire broadband technologies to deliver aggregated data rates up to 250 Mbps over 200m twisted-pair copper line lengths. Entirely based on Lantiq's technology, the ultra-low power FALC™-ON GPON and the VINAX™V3 VDSL2 chipsets, the solution was jointly developed with Aethra® Telecommunications, a leading access network equipment supplier, and also benefits from patent-pending reverse power feeding circuitry. The system sets a new performance benchmark for next generation copper access, supporting triple play broadband services including multiple HD TV channels over IP.

Lantiq and Aethra® Telecommunications will demonstrate their FTTdp solution, which enables service providers to deploy CapEx efficient solutions today offering significantly higher data rate performance, at Broadband World Forum (BBWF), October 16-18 in Amsterdam (Lantiq Booth C4). Working from fiber drop points on a neighborhood pole or in a building basement, service providers can provision multiple customer end-points for the enhanced VDSL2 service. Importantly, only the very low-power consumption of Lantiq's broadband access product portfolio makes it possible to reverse power the distribution point from the customer's premise.
Balanced Fiber and Copper Investment for Advanced Broadband Service
- To overcome the high CapEx requirements for Fiber to the Home (FTTH) deployments, Lantiq's FTTdp solution leverages growing fiber networks and existing copper wire infrastructure to more than double typical copper-based broadband service speeds by moving the optical fiber access point closer to the users.
- The BBWF solution demo for FTTdp is fully reverse powered, based on a customer premise power injector adaptor developed by Aethra Telecommunications. The maximum power budget for the reverse powered distribution point is limited to less than 10W. Considering loss of power from AC/DC efficiency, DC/DC efficiency and transmission loss, the power budget remaining for the GPON and VDSL2 chipset is very limited. The ultra-low power consumption of the Lantiq solution and Aethra Telecommunications' long-term experience with low-power consumption hardware designs meet this requirement, ensuring that the distribution point can be reverse powered by only a single user.
- The combination of Lantiq FALC-ON GPON and VINAX V3 VDSL2 chipset enable system manufacturers to address a variety of deployment scenarios for FTTdp, ranging from single user copper extension of fiber to as many as 16 users being served by a single fiber access point. To maintain the increased copper-performance in multi-user user deployments, Lantiq offers VDSL2 Vectoring to compensate for the additional cross-talk between the users.
- Both the Lantiq FALC-ON GPON and VINAX V3 VDSL2 chipset are in volume production today to support rapid development and deployment of the FTTdp solution.
Comments
Hans-Peter Trost, Senior Marketing Manager of Lantiq's Access Networks Business Unit: "Delivering an aggregate data rate of 200 Mbps or more based on enhanced copper technologies allows service providers to capitalize on the potential of their existing copper access networks. At Lantiq, we strive to produce innovations that allow our customers to deliver broadband equipment that enables service providers to optimize their next generation network deployments. We are very excited to work with Aethra on a system design that defines a new benchmark for copper-based broadband access services."
Antonino Paris, R&D Head of Aethra Telecommunications: "FTTH has suffered since now of a number of stop and go deployments, especially in Western Europe, due to inherent difficulties in cabling fiber inside buildings. FTTB as well has been limited by all the issues related to powering MDx equipment and buildings' basement. Aethra Telecommunications' spirit of finding innovative solutions for the access network has greatly benefitted from Lantiq cooperation, paving the way to overcome all these constraints in a simple and effective way. High Speed Internet access at 100 Mbps symmetric is now possible at a fraction of complexity and costs of FTTx.
