"Senator Harman is an excellent and well-qualified candidate to be California's next Attorney General. We were honored that he sought our endorsement and are proud to offer him our support and endorsement," noted Steve Ipsen, President – Association of Deputy District Attorneys.
Tom Harman is the leading Republican candidate for Attorney General and is supported by California's "Three Strikes and You're Out" co-authors Mike Reynolds and former Secretary of State Bill Jones. Harman has taken issue with Los Angeles District Attorney Steve Cooley's efforts to weaken "Three Strikes." Cooley, who is mulling over a decision to run for Attorney General, led the 2006 initiative committee formed to weaken Three Strikes. That effort was funded by the law partner of O.J. Simpson defense attorney Johnnie Cochran.
A recent internal survey showed Senator Harman besting Steve Cooley on the First Ballot question:
California Senator Tom Harman 21.3% |
District Attorney Steve Cooley 15.1% |
Harman also bested ex-law school dean John Eastman – 27.9% to 11.7%
However, when voters were made aware of Cooley's efforts to weaken "Three Strikes" the Harman lead jumped significantly:
California Senator Tom Harman 57.6% |
District Attorney Steve Cooley 17.1% |
