John Cabot University in Rome Announces Writers in Residence for Upcoming Summer Session
ROME, Feb. 17, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The Institute for Creative Writing and Literary Translation at John Cabot University, an accredited American university in Rome, has announced Charles Wright as the Poet in Residence and Dorothy Allison as the Novelist in Residence for the 2011 Summer Session. The Institute is known as a place for students to spend time on their writing as part of their learning experience living in Rome, the Eternal City.
Since its founding in 2009, the Institute for Creative Writing and Literary Translation at John Cabot University has quickly become a thriving community of and for writers in Rome, hosting poets, novelists and writers alike in its year-round reading series that highlights the writers in residence. The Institute offers workshops in fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and literary translation, as well as literature courses designed specifically for writers. Institute students also participate in social and educational events with faculty and visiting writers.
The Institute has previously hosted writers such as Dacia Maraini, Mark Strand, Simon Mawer, Marianne Boruch, and Edmund White. The Institute's writers in residence are directly involved with students in the Institute's classes. They take part in a public reading of their work, give class lectures, teach master classes, and participate in round-table discussions with students, other faculty and the Italian press. Novelist and short story writer Joyce Carol Oates will be the Novelist in Residence for summer 2012.
"We are striving to make John Cabot's Institute for Creative Writing and Literary Translation the essential location for creative writers across the globe to come and develop their writing skills," said the Institute's Founding Director, Professor Carlos Dews. "We keep our classes small so our students can become the best writers possible under the guidance of our faculty and distinguished writers in residence."
Though the Institute is most active during the summer session, workshops and classes are offered in the spring and fall, and are available to both full-time and study-abroad students. Courses are taught by renowned faculty from the United States, Italy, and the rest of Europe.
A selection of students' works is posted on the Institute's blog which can be seen at http://jcucreativewriting.wordpress.com/.
