CNN host Francisco de Rincon asked the main topic, "Is Hugo Chavez the same?" The following were direct responses by Juan Jose Rendon (paraphrased):
- The method Hugo Chavez delivered the message, which in contrast to most of Chavez speeches and public addresses was read from a non-state podium. The speech was read which as well as the manner in which it was delivered was uncharacteristic and displayed a sad, and weak Hugo Chavez “This is direct contrast to the advice I give any Presidential client I advise during a crisis”
- Although, Mr. Rendon publically is in opposition of Hugo Chavez, Mr. Rendon stated I am "respectful of this situation and difficult moment for Hugo Chavez."
- Mr. Rendon's most impactful statement was in respect to Mr. Chavez and his ability to continue managing Venezuela – Mr. Rendon stated, "As a head of state managing a country in crisis Hugo Chavez due to the state of his health exposed to the world in this conference may not have the mental and physical capacity to lead a country in such crisis as Venezuela"
Joining JJ Rendon, a well-known opposition leader and frequent guest on CNN, was Alberto Frederico Ravell, ex Director of Venezuelan Television GlobalVision.
At this moment, the international community as well as the Venezuela people will remain unclear as to the actual health situation of Hugo Chavez Frias and will remain unclear of the capacity of the current Government's abilities to govern and manage such a crisis.
The Venezuelan Government has officially canceled the summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) on 5 July.
The summit was to be held on Margarita Island, and would have coincided with the 200th anniversary of Venezuela's independence from Spain.
Heads of state, including Brazil's Dilma Rousseff, Ecuador's Rafael Correa and Chile's Sebastian Pinera, had planned to attend.
Additional Information for Media:
Mr. Rendon will be open to discuss the recent election victories in Colombia and Honduras as well as his 23-year career as one of Latin America's most prolific Political figures.
