IT Jobs Growth Modestly Decelerates; Engineering Employment Remains Anemic
ALEXANDRIA, Va., July 13, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The number of IT jobs grew 0.2 percent sequentially last month to 5,133,600, according to TechServe Alliance, the national trade association of the IT & Engineering Staffing and Solutions industry. On a year-over-year basis, IT employment grew by 3.7% since June 2015 adding 182,800 IT workers.
After coming in flat in May, Engineering employment in June posted growth of only 0.04 percent sequentially to 2,531,200. On a year-over-year basis, engineering employment grew by an anemic 0.6% since June 2015 adding 15,200 engineering workers.
"Despite the deceleration, the growth rate for IT employment on a year-over-year basis continues to outpace the overall workforce. On the engineering side, employment has been essentially flat the last two months," stated Mark Roberts, CEO of TechServe Alliance. "In IT and even engineering, it is important to remember that all skill sets are not equal. There remains an acute shortage of talent in many high demand skill sets. Further, while demand has waned for some types of engineers given the headwinds being experienced by the industries that typically employ those skill sets, strong demand for technical talent in other industries continues unabated," observed Roberts.
