Ken Allen with WJTK news in Lake City interviewed music director Dan Magstadt and a lead singer, Mell McGee.
Ken: How did the band get started?
Dan: Since we were little kids we've been singing together. A couple years ago we said, "Let's form a group." We love to sing and we love to worship. We've performed all over Florida, and most recently, the Dominican Republic.
Something that makes us very unique as a group is we all bring something to the table - versus one person setting the tone. As far as the music, worship and style; we all collaborate and bring something from our backgrounds.
Mell: It's something that we love to do and we've enjoyed doing for a long time. We got to the point where we thought, "We've been so blessed by it why not share it? We're having this much fun and it's done so much for us, let's let everybody in our hometown enjoy it with us." This is the first venue we've done in Lake City, we've opened it up as a concert to the surrounding communities to come and enjoy it with us.
Ken: What will people hear?
Mell: If you like listening to good singing and good music, and you love to worship then you want to be there. It's going to be fun. It's going to be exciting. It's going to be worship! There will be fast songs and slow songs. It's going to be moving. It's going to be powerful!
Dan: We want to make an impact on your life when you are here. Maybe it's the lyrics of the songs, maybe it's just the feeling that you have felt here, but I can tell you that you'll feel a little different when you leave our concert.
Dan: We sing a lot of other artist songs that people will be familiar with. We try to put a little bit of our own twist on some of them. There will also be some songs that we've written internally, and those we love to sing as well.
Mell: We want people to come out and have a good time. It's about getting together and just having a good time. Us being able to do what we love doing – singing and worshipping – and people being able to come in and just relax and just have a good time.
Ken: Alright, how about your background?
Mell: Actually, my mom and my family has always sang. I come from a long line of singers. My aunt used to sing in church and that carried over to my mom, so we've always been around music. I can't think of a day growing up as a child, where there wasn't music playing in the background and my mother wasn't singing. And then we would get together and we'd sing together so it's just been a combination of that over the years. I again say: I'm just one of us, I mean, my brother, to me, he is absolutely amazing!
Dan: He's incredible.
Ken: Any online videos, where people can go get a glimpse of you?
Dan: Yeah. You can go to our website www.spirittruthworship.com. There are some videos and clips on there of some of our singers and music that we've done.
Ken: How do they approach if they want more information on you, and maybe want to book dates or have you come play at their church? How do they reach you guys?
Dan: Again, they can go to the website www.spirittruthworship.com.
They can also email [email protected] or [email protected] or call 386-754-2584.
Ken: Now what about the worship that's going to take place after the singing? I mean, are you going to go up and preach? Do you have somebody that's in the band that does some ministering?
Dan: Yeah. There will be some speaking and the worship will be as part of the concert. We don't want to get up and just preach though.
[Laughing] You know, this isn't a church service. It's a concert!
But we'll maybe talk about the band a little bit and interact with the crowd. But our goal is for this to be a fun, enjoyable event.
Ken: So if somebody's listening and saying, hey a concert that's free, what do you want them to take from Friday's event? When they come and see you, what do you hope that when they leave, they take with them?
Mell: I think more than anything I want people to say – "You know what? That was different than any concert I've ever been to. That was - it changed my life! The music, the songs, the lyrics, there was something different about it!"
That's what we want. We want people to feel what we feel when we sing and we worship. That's a gift given to us that we just want to share.
If there's anything that I would want somebody to come and say- "That was different! I like that! Where do we go? What website? Where do we get more of that music? Can I come back on a Sunday? When are you guys gonna do it again?"
If you like music, if you like good singing and love to worship, you don't wanna miss it.
