Insurrection is the result of Australia's unintended position as the world's preeminent source for flavor-packed Ultra-Premium wines at extreme values. Australia's struggling export market (Australian wine volume declined over seven percent in Nielsen 52-week period ending March 28, 2015) has resulted in an abundance of exceptional fruit available at attainable prices. Roden notes, "I defy you to find a bigger, better value than Insurrection. It's a great solution to a problem that I, as a winemaker, relish, because we have so much great, powerful fruit to work with in Australia right now."
To create the inaugural vintage of Insurrection, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz were sourced from cool climate vineyards in two regions in South Eastern Australia: Padthaway and Langhorne Creek. Here, the grapes need thick skins to withstand extreme temperature swings. Warm days develop intense aromas and flavors and cool nights maintain the robust character of the grapes. Insurrection fruit was left on the vine as long as possible to concentrate those flavors, night harvested to maintain freshness and rotary fermented to enhance power. French and American oak aging for nine months contributed spice to the wine and structured tannins. With alcohol logging in at 15.5%, Insurrection makes a serious statement.
Roden comments, "I am extremely proud of this wine because it highlights all the things Australian wines are best known for: big, rich flavor, tons of fruit and immediate drinkability." The 2013 Insurrection delivers intense aromas of red berries, plum, cherry and spice. Bold flavors envelop the palate with layers of ripe red fruit, plum and chocolate. Shiraz offers berries and spice, while Cabernet Sauvignon delivers power and structure. Relentless waves of strong, rich flavor resolve into a long, smooth finish.
