The global financial crisis has had a limited impact on China's economy, and the urbanization progress remains steady with the living standards improving. This provides a guarantee for the development of China's automotive industry. Meanwhile the Chinese government promulgated and implemented a series of policies for automobile consumption in early 2009, which stimulated the rapid recovery of the domestic automotive market, showing rapid upward momentum. According to the statistics, China's automobile production and sales achieved 13,791,000 and 13,644,800 in 2009; an increase of 48% and 46% compared to 2008. Total production and total sales have become the first in the world for the first time. At the same time, China's passenger car sales were over 10 million for the first time in 2009, which were stimulated by the government-led policies. China's automobile production and sales have set new records at the first quarter of 2010. Production and sales rose to 4,554,500 and 4,610,600, a rise of 77% and 72% to the same time period in 2009.
The 25-year-old Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition has successfully built a chic stage for global automotive enterprises, has became a key platform for intensive exchange and corporation of automotive industries home and abroad as well as become a significant carrier, leading industry development and promoting automobile consumption. The biennial AUTO Shanghai was born in 1985 as the earliest professional automotive exhibition in China with a scale of 73 exhibitors and 15,000 square meters; AUTO Shanghai 2003 was moved to Shanghai International Expo Center for the first time, and made a success despite the SARS epidemic, which reflected the strong organizational and coordination abilities of the organizers. AUTO Shanghai 2005 gathered all global 6+3 automotive giants and domestic automobile manufacturers. All of them set big booths based on the criteria of a global top automobile event, which basically shifted the level of AUTO Shanghai. AUTO Shanghai 2007 brought the most eye-catching global debut cars to Shanghai. The AUTO Shanghai 2009, with a total exhibition area of 170,000 square meters, attracted over 1,500 exhibitors from 25 countries and regions, 918 show cars (including 316 imported cars and 602 homemade), 13 global debut cars, 7,287 reporters (including 763 overseas reporters) of more than 1800 media from 38 regions and countries, and also more than about 600,000 visitors, which jointly witnessed the success and resplendence of AUTO Shanghai 2009. The number of visitors on 25th April 2009 set a record of 136,000. All data above set records in the history of AUTO Shanghai and are memorable in China's exhibition industry.
On the occasion of a pattern change in the global automotive industry and under the support of all automotive giants at home and abroad, AUTO Shanghai 2011 will use all the Shanghai New International Expo Center's 13 indoor exhibition halls (used 11 indoor exhibition halls in 2009) and outdoor temporary exhibition halls, the scale will be over 200,000 square meters. The organizers will set 19 and 20 April as media days only available for domestic and foreign media in order to help journalists report AUTO Shanghai. It will be taken into consideration that visitors need ample time for visiting, hence, the organizers will add one exhibition day. AUTO Shanghai is extended from 21 to 28 April 2011(21 and 22 April for the professional visitors, 23 - 28 April for the public to visit).
