Injured Service Members Help Homeless Veterans
Wounded Warrior Project Alumni Give Back in Northern California
SACRAMENTO, Calif., March 23, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- From sweeping to organizing, Christina Eggros did what she could to help fellow veterans fight homelessness. Christina, National Guard veteran and Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) Alumna, brought her son to join other wounded veterans as they turned an empty apartment into someone's home.
Volunteers of America Northern California and Northern Nevada is turning an old apartment building into 12 apartment homes to help homeless veterans get on their feet. So far, six of the units have been renovated. WWP brought in furniture and other items to help breathe life into one of the apartments. WWP Volunteers spent several hours putting together furniture and getting the apartment in order.
The WWP Alumni program brings wounded veterans together through service projects, dinners, outdoor events, and sports to create individual support structures. Through shared experiences, injured service members can see they are not alone. More than 100,000 wounded veterans, caregivers, and families receive access to WWP programs and services, all of which are free of charge.
"This was a small way for me to pay back WWP for all the fun stuff I have been able to do with my son," Christina said. "We felt that helping, especially other veterans, is just a small token of our appreciation of WWP."
James Benvenudo is a WWP Alumnus and Air Force veteran who also enjoyed the chance to give back.
"I was able to do work that will have a significant impact on improving the lives of some of the most vulnerable veterans," James said.
Partnering with other organizations is just one way WWP works to reach as many injured service members as possible. WWP partnered with or funded more than 100 organizations in 2015. One group of organizations, America's Warrior Partnership, helped nearly 20,000 wounded veterans from Florida to California. Nearly two-thirds of which are veterans from this generation. Through Programmatic Investments, WWP helps fund the veteran service organizations that make up America's Warrior Partnership.
