AcceleDent is a simple, removable dental device that an orthodontic patient wears in the mouth for 20 minutes daily to accelerate orthodontic tooth movement. A Phase I clinical trial in 2008 in Houston, Texas demonstrated the safety of the device. The first case in private practice was initiated in October 2009 in the UK, following EU approval.
Mr. Szwajkowski's background is particularly relevant to OrthoAccel's development of the AcceleDent brand. His extensive experience includes international business development, sales and marketing, and general management. While at 3M Unitek, an orthodontic appliance business, his roles included market leadership in Latin American and Europe from the 1980s into the early 2000s. Mr. Szwajkowski also oversaw several acquisitions and new business launches prior to retiring as Global Head of 3M Unitek, a role he held from 2001 – 2007.
Michael Lowe, CEO of OrthoAccel, commented, "We are committed to building the AcceleDent brand around the customer above all else and we believe that Val can provide critical insight to help us guide the development of this new product category. The management team here is very pleased to have his consultation and involvement in what we are doing." Mr. Szwajkowski remarked, "I look forward to working with OrthoAccel's strong, talented team in bringing a highly innovative product applying leading edge, clinically proven biomedical bone stimulation techniques into the orthodontic market."
Last month, OrthoAccel hired a Director of Sales in the United Kingdom, which is where efforts will be focused in 2010, as well as in Australia. Canada is also a planned market for this year, although regulatory clearance is pending.
OrthoAccel is nearing conclusion of another US clinical trial at the UT Health Science Center in San Antonio with an anticipated completion date in 2010.
