Hyland's Teething Tablets Recall Announced after FDA Confirms High Levels of Potentially-Toxic Belladonna, Bernstein Liebhard LLP Reports

NEW YORK, April 17, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The Standard Homeopathic Company has issued a recall for all lots of Hyland's Baby Teething Tablets and Hyland's Baby Nighttime Teething Tablets, after the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed that the products contained excessive levels of potentially toxic belladonna. Consumers with these medications in their possession should contact Standard Homeopathic at 1-800-991-3376 (Monday-Friday 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Pacific Time).

Children who ingest too much belladonna are at risk for seizures and other potentially life-threatening adverse events.  Parents and caregivers should avoid using Hyland's Teething Tablets to treat teething pain in infants and children. Contact a doctor if a child experiences breathing difficulty, lethargy, excessive sleepiness, muscle weakness, skin flushing, constipation, difficulty urinating  or agitation following ingestion of a homeopathic teething remedy.

Teething Tablets Warnings and Recalls

Following the FDA's warning last September, several retailers moved to pull homeopathic teething remedies from their store shelves. Standard Homeopathic announced that it would stop marketing Hyland's teething tablets in the U.S.  However, the company's products were not officially recalled.

In November, Raritan Pharmaceuticals announced a recall of its homeopathic teething tablets and ear pain liquids after tests suggested they might contain varying amounts of belladonna.

The FDA issued a warning specific to Hyland's teething tablets in January, after the agency determined that the products contained inconsistent levels of belladonna, possibly in excess of  the amount claimed on the label. The FDA formally asked Standard Homeopathic to issue a teething tablets recall on April 10^th.

This is not the first time Hyland's products have been found to contain inconsistent amounts of belladonna. Hyland's homeopathic teething remedies were also recalled in 2010, after they were linked to adverse events suggestive of belladonna poisoning.
