Honeywell Hometown Solutions Launches New Leadership Program for High School Students and Awards 160 Scholarships
Company Sending 160 Students from 20 Countries and 28 U.S. States and Territories to the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL for "Honeywell Leadership Challenge Academy"
MORRIS TOWNSHIP, N.J., Feb. 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Honeywell (NYSE: HON) announced today that it has awarded scholarships to 160 students from 20 countries and 28 U.S. states and territories to attend the Honeywell Leadership Challenge Academy. It will run from February 28 to March 5 at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL.
Honeywell's Leadership Challenge Academy (HLCA), created in partnership with the U.S. Space & Rocket Center will provide students with a unique opportunity to engage in sessions addressing current issues in science, technology and engineering. The program is designed to develop their capacities through hands on challenges and build their leadership skills.
Students will engage in interactive activities and workshops created to enhance their leadership fundamentals. Simulated astronaut training, including a realistic shuttle mission and experiencing what it is like to walk on the moon and tumble in a space capsule - as well as stress-inducing and time-critical physical challenges and designing, building and testing their own rockets and simulating jet-fighter pilot training - will all be a part of HLCA.
During the week-long program, students will meet with scientists, engineers, and former astronauts to reinforce core leadership competencies and provide them with first-hand accounts of professional experiences. These competencies include: purposeful leadership, critical thinking, integrated planning, effective communication and team trust and cohesion. Additionally many of the activities will require students to present their findings or opinions to a panel of experts.
"We're incredibly excited to send this impressive group of students to the Leadership Challenge Academy," said Tom Buckmaster, President, Honeywell Hometown Solutions. "The program leverages and develops the students' individual talents that will launch them to the next level of personal growth and achievement for affecting change as our future leaders."
Honeywell and the U.S. Space & Rocket Center award the scholarships after a rigorous application and review process based on academic achievement and community involvement. All junior and senior level high school children of full-time Honeywell employees are eligible to apply. Financial contributions from Honeywell employees help fund the scholarships, which include tuition for the week-long program, meals, accommodations and program materials.
"Honeywell and their employees have a long history of promoting unique math and science education programs around the world," says Larry Capps, CEO of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. He adds, "Honeywell's Leadership Challenge Academy is further evidence of this commitment. As such, we share a common goal of helping to prepare the next generation of scientists, engineers and explorers. We are excited and proud to partner with Honeywell in this endeavor."
