Honeywell Helps Drive Energy Efficiency in the Carolinas Through Residential Programs
Programs Will Give Progress Energy Customers Rebates, Upgrades and Other Services to Cut Consumption and Costs
MINNEAPOLIS, April 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Honeywell (NYSE: HON) today announced two separate, three-year contracts with Progress Energy to manage and deliver energy efficiency programs for residential customers in North and South Carolina. The Home Energy Improvement and Neighborhood Energy Saver programs will help customers save energy and money through a variety of measures, including home energy assessments, education services and rebates for efficiency improvements.

The programs will target more than 1.4 million Progress Energy residential customers across 34,000 square miles in the Carolinas. Under the contract, Honeywell will provide training, marketing and customer service support to drive enrollment.
Home Energy Improvement Program
As part of a three-year, $3.1-million contract, Honeywell will manage Progress Energy Carolinas' Home Energy Improvement Program (HEIP), which offers rebates to homeowners for implementing improvements like heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) upgrades, equipment tune-ups, energy-efficient window installations and air sealing.
Under HEIP, customers select from a list of prequalified contractors to perform the upgrades and then receive rebates in return. Honeywell will provide customer support, process rebates, and recruit and train contractors to assist in implementing the efficiency measures.
HEIP, which began in July 2009, is available to Progress Energy customers in North and South Carolina who live in existing single-family, multi-family and manufactured homes, including mobile homes. To date, Honeywell has processed more than 10,000 rebate requests for Progress Energy and trained more than 700 contractors.
Progress Energy expects to save more than 31 million kilowatt-hours of electricity over the course of the program — enough energy to power more than 2,900 homes for a year. Additional goals include completing 4,000 window replacement projects, insulating and sealing 2,000 homes, and performing tune-ups on more than 15,000 HVAC systems.
Neighborhood Energy Saver
Under a three-year, $3.6-million contract, Progress Energy Carolinas has enlisted Honeywell to deliver the Neighborhood Energy Saver program (NES). Modeled after a similar program delivered to customers in Progress Energy's Florida service area, NES provides energy-saving information and conservation measures to help low-income single- and multi-family residential customers cut electricity consumption and costs.
Honeywell will work with Progress Energy to canvass neighborhoods with informational materials, plan kick-off events in each community and engage in a door-to-door campaign to announce the program to residents. Honeywell will perform an in-home assessment of energy use and educate residents on energy-saving techniques and areas to improve efficiency. Honeywell will also install appropriate conservation measures, including compact fluorescent lighting, weather stripping, water pipe insulation and high-efficiency showerheads.
Progress Energy expects to provide energy-efficiency improvements to approximately 10,000 homes by 2011 through the NES program.
"Infrastructure and equipment improvements are just one side of the energy-efficiency program equation," said Paul Orzeske, president of Honeywell Building Solutions. "Utilities like Progress Energy are looking for help in reaching their customer segments with programs that consider specific customer needs and requirements. Honeywell has the technical and customer-specific knowledge to deliver programs that impact energy behavior and costs."
