The mobile platform, soon available for multiple mobile OSes including iOS, Android and BlackBerry, allows users to answer simple questions such as "What do you like about this spot?" The consumer input identifies key interests and buyer motivation dubbed a likestyle. The system matches users with similar likestyles and allows them to connect to one another on a team. Team members can qualify the entire team for special offers and timed actions that lead to big savings or exclusive products by 'tagging' retail, restaurant and hotel locations.
In a move that distances them from platforms like Foursquare, Likestyle maintains user privacy by not broadcasting their location and utilizes anonymous usernames.
While companies such as Groupon maintain an online presence, Likestyle focuses on connecting teams to offers using smartphones in physical space through the use of tags or labels displaying a unique QR code. QR codes are a simple visual shortcut that can be interpreted by the phone's camera that allows Likestyle to know where that consumer is.
Likestyle Co-Founder Brad Thorne says the differences between his company and Groupon are evident.
"Likestyle really makes it simple for a consumer to be seen and appreciated as an individual. Rather than promote generic offers, our platform allows users to share rewards and offers with others that appreciate the things they do. Consumers don't need to pressure their social networks to participate. In fact, we can bring like-minded people together and it's all based on interests," Thorne explains.
In a time where retailers are taking a close look at mobile programs for their stores, Likestyle has a unique approach from mobile competitors such as Shopkick.
"Our tags are simple and effective and can be placed practically anywhere needed to deliver rewards without the installation of hardware. We're currently in discussions to launch tags in individual store departments, waiting rooms, vending machines and historical towns to name a few," says Co-Founder Jerry Broughton.
"We want to offer creative rewards in any physical space where someone could benefit from the foot traffic, not just retail space," adds Thorne.
Likestyle is slated to launch this summer in anticipation of the upcoming holiday shopping season.
