HNBA Announces Winners of 15th Annual Uvaldo Herrera National Moot Court Competition

WASHINGTON, March 17 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Law students representing 32 of the nation's top law schools gathered at the University of San Diego School of Law on March 5-6, 2010 to participate in the Hispanic National Bar Association's (HNBA) 15th Annual Uvaldo Herrera National Moot Court Competition.  

"We always have exceptional students, but this year the competition is truly fierce.  All teams produced very strong written briefs and oral arguments. In fact, some members of the judiciary who judged the competition commented that the students' oral argument skills equaled or surpassed some practitioners who appear before them. This event continues to be an HNBA crown jewel," stated Roman D. Hernandez, HNBA National President.  "I thank the 12 judges from the HNBA Judicial Council who traveled from different places around country to be present and to support the HNBA's moot court competition.  Also, a big 'thank you' to Joel Villasenor of the law firm Sullivan Taketa LLP for organizing such a successful event," concluded Hernandez.  

The 15th Annual Uvaldo Herrera National Moot Court Competition Championship Round was judged by Chief Judge Irma Gonzalez (U.S. District Court for the S.D. of California); Chief Justice Paul J. De Muniz (Oregon Supreme Court); Justice (Ret.) Charles Z. Smith (Washington Supreme Court); Justice David Medina (Texas Supreme Court); Judge Gil Roman (Colorado Court of Appeals); and Tom Dupree, Partner, Gibson Dunn & Crutcher LLP.   The Competition's awards were presented during the event's closing Gala Dinner before nearly 400 people who were in attendance.  The Competition's top four teams were:

• National Champions: Loyola School of Law - Los Angeles
• 2nd Place: University of Texas School of Law
• 3rd Place: William Mitchell College of Law
• 4th Place: University of Nevada Las Vegas, William S. Boyd School of Law

In addition, the HNBA also presented awards in the following categories as indicated:

• Petitioner Brief 1st Place:  Fordham School of Law
• Petitioner Brief Runner-Up: Franklin Pierce School of Law
• Respondent Brief 1st Place: Loyola School of Law - Los Angeles
• Respondent Brief Runner-Up: William Mitchell School of Law
• Oral Advocate 1st Place: Claudia Perez (Loyola School of Law - Los Angeles)
• Oral Advocate Runner-Up: Gabriela Ramirez (Loyola School of Law - Los Angeles)
• Oral Advocate 2nd Runner-Up: Jessica Trevizo (Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law)

In order to assist the students with their educational needs, the top four moot court teams were also awarded with a cumulative total of $15,000.00 in scholarships, the most scholarship monies ever awarded during the history of the Competition.
