Hemp Health Inc. Launches Line of "Cannabidiol" (CBD) Supplements as Alternative to Medical Marijuana
Legal, hemp-based supplements offer concentrated CBD without psychoactive side effects
CARLSBAD, Calif., Nov. 4, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Hemp Health Inc., a pioneer in hemp cannabidiol (CBD) products, today launched their line of CBD wellness supplements. Available in oil, spray and capsule form, Hemp Health's products offer a compelling alternative to medical marijuana. The CBD supplements provide consumers with the therapeutic ingredient in hemp while allowing them to avoid the negative mental and physical effects of marijuana.
As the United States remains engaged in debate over the benefits, safety and legality of cannabis, physicians and researchers have been actively studying and testing the plant to understand its medicinal properties. Their work has overwhelmingly identified the cannabinoid CBD as the active medicinal compound in cannabis. This finding inspired business partners Katarina Maloney and Janell Thompson to explore ways to isolate CBD and sell it to consumers in concentrated form. They developed a proprietary CO2-based method for extracting pure CBD from industrial hemp without the use of dangerous chemicals or additives.
Their mission to bring CBD products to the American public began in 2013 with the launch of Hemp Hookazzh, a company that produces e-cigarettes and e-liquids infused with CBD as a smoke-free alternative to tobacco products and marijuana. With pure CBD and no THC, the compound responsible for the physical and mental impairments of marijuana, Hemp Hookazzh has provided a compelling alternative for smokers trying to overcome their addiction. However, for the non-smoking majority of Americans, Maloney and Thompson realized they needed to offer different delivery options.
"There is extraordinary confusion about the differences between CBD and medical marijuana, and we know that a first step in educating the public is to create products that take smoking and THC out of the picture," said Maloney. "Hemp Health is all about providing CBD supplements that can be taken as pills, mixed in salads or consumed as an oral spray. It's a step towards helping CBD become a mainstream wellness supplement like fish oil."
Unlike medical marijuana, which is produced from strains of cannabis designed to deliver high levels of THC, Hemp Health's products come from industrial hemp, the high CBD, low-THC strain used to produce ropes, textiles, wax, resins, paper and other materials. An organic, kosher and vegan product, Hemp Health's hemp is sourced from sustainable farms in Germany, Denmark and other European countries.
"Even though CBD is now legal in 50 states and 42 countries, there is still a legal muzzle preventing companies like us from discussing medicinal qualities," said Thompson. "Thankfully, media events like Dr. Sanjay Gupta's CNN Special Report 'WEED' brought national attention to how cannabis products are being used to treat cancer, seizures, multiple sclerosis (MS), glaucoma, pain and other ailments. It was a big victory, but it's still not clear to the public that there are better ways to get CBD than through smoking THC-rich marijuana. That is why we are producing and advocating pure CBD products."
Today on PubMed.gov, a medical research database sponsored by the National Center for Biotechnology Information, there are citations for 1,270 academic articles specifically on cannabidiol. Currently, there are two FDA-approved cannabinoid medications and the National Cancer Institute's informational pages on Cannabis and Cannabinoids cites numerous laboratory and clinical studies on cannabinoid's potential in cancer treatments.
Interestingly, The United States of America, represented by the Department of Health and Human Services, also filed a patent (6,630,507) in 2001 for the use of "Cannabinoids as antioxidants and neuroprotectants". The patent abstract states that "The cannabinoids are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants, for example in limiting neurological damage following ischemic insults, such as stroke and trauma, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and HIV dementia."
"There is an inconsistency between the government's awareness of CBD's medical potential and its legal attitude towards hemp," added Maloney. "I believe our CBD product line can help change this from the ground up."
